Front-load the exposed work
Major hikes and exposed park objectives should begin early. Midday is better used for food, rest, shade, water, lodging time, or an activity deliberately selected for conditions.
A late start cannot always be fixed by carrying more water.
Do not confuse a wet canyon with automatic safety
Water can make an outing more comfortable, but canyon choice still depends on recent and forecast weather, flash-flood exposure, route conditions, and the group's ability.
Use a qualified local operator to match the day rather than locking onto a route because a social post called it a summer canyon.
Build a backup before you need it
A heat-smart plan has a lower-exposure substitute ready instead of improvising after the group is already depleted.
- Short scenic drives and overlooks
- River-oriented activities
- Town, museum, or lodging recovery time
- A guided route selected for the day's conditions
